Pretending to Be…

The most Dangerous Place in the World…

… is your bed.

The Erie railroad kills 23 to 46; the other 845 railroads kill an average of one-third of a man each; and the rest of that million, amounting in the aggregate to that appalling figure of 987,631 corpses, die naturally in their beds! You will excuse me from taking any more chances on those beds. The railroads are good enough for me.

-Mark Twain excerpted from “The Danger of Lying in Bed”

…so continues my love/hate relationship with my refuge of rest otherwise known as my bed…

A Metaphor of Life…

Sometimes in life, you feel like you are getting chased by a naked guy on a bike with a cardboard box over his head.
And you dont want to get caught.

So you
just keep on swimming pedaling…
just keep on swimming pedaling…
just keep on swimming pedaling…
just keep on swimming pedaling…

First project we’re working with plaster and blue foam. And its safe to say this has been the worst design experience of my life. Me and my group could never get the plaster mix right: its always either to clay-ey or too thick and the sanding the foam is a bitch to work with. And not to mention that the studio is a complete mess and utter DISASTER…
The fucking plaster gets everywhere all over your shoes, your, clothes, your face, your hair and into your boxers.
Its horrible.

On top of all that the models didnt even come out good.
Fuuccccckkkkkk….

I love qoutables.
I love typography.
Which means I love this piece by Andy Mangold.
I had to crop out the pictures ’cause my html coding restricts certain picture size, so definitely go to his site to view the full pics.

Ironically this project was to showcase a new font/typeface, Clarendon, but the writing in the journals overshadows any of that. I dont know for sure if that was the true intention, only the artist can truly know that, but sometimes the final product is not the embodiment of your original ambitions, but is still provocative and ingenious nonetheless. The final product is what the public is only seeing, but like the “tip of the iceberg” cliche, there was a long generated process that no one else knows but the artist and the fact that you can accomplish something that you never intended is sometimes the most gratifying experience. Now this may not be the case with this specific project, but its something that has been on my mind for a while and seeing this work today just reminded me even more of it.

Just because you didn’t do what you set out to do, that fact does not discount your effort. In fact it may be for the better.

But I digress,
Andy Mangold has some cool stuff.

Not that I was going to win, probably not, but it would have been cool to say i did. Ehhhh… fuck me and my clumsiness…
We have about 2 more weeks to finish the project…
I like where im going with my idea…
The simple structure above is just scratching the surface of what i ave planned…

Stuck in Wonderland…

“I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same, the next question is ‘Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!”

Barack Obama is a Metaphor…

“Love is a red red Rose”

Metaphors are wonderful for the fact that it attempts to explain the deepest and most profound theories & ideas in a few simple words. The fact that a rose has thorns, its beautiful fragrance and aesthetic prowess, or the chance that it may shrivel and die; all the aspects of a rose hold a connection to love that can explain the intricacies of that hormonal state we call love. Love is truly a red red rose.

But the problem with this metaphor, as well as with all metaphors, is that while they apply generally to all people, once you get to specific examples and conflicts of love it ceases to hold any relevance. Does the red red rose metaphor describe the a situation where you are married to a women, but since she was married before you have to see her ex-husband all the time? Or when you love someone but their whole family objects to it? The bottom line is that metaphors fail when you attempt to use them in situations that are individual-specific conflicts.

The right side of your brain uses feeling, is “big picture” oriented, where imagination rules, uses symbols and images, looks at present and future, consideres philosophy & religion, it believes, appreciates, has spatial perception, knows object function, is fantasy based, presents possibilities, is impetuous, and is risk taking.

In short the right side of the brain is what causes you to think in metaphorical terms.

The left side of your brain you ask? It uses uses logic, is detail oriented, facts rule, thinks in words and language, connects present and past, math and science, can comprehend, acknowledges, knows order/pattern perception, knows object name, is reality based, forms strategies, and is practical & safe

The reason for stating all this is to throw two more metaphors at you:
“Barack Obama is Hope.”
“Barack Obama is Change.”

Now the question I pose, is should politicians deal in metaphors? Should politics in general emphasize metaphors? Am I wrong to reason that politics and government should deal in left-brain activities not the metaphoric nature of the right-side of the brain?

But politics and government are slowly becoming a huge, boring metaphor. Barack Obama is a prime example of that. His policies are thrown to the back burner while metaphorical ideas and his “All-American story” is spun every which way to cater to peoples of different backgrounds who are supposed to relate. Hell, you can even purchase his “All-American” Story.
Barack Obama is very much a right-side of the brain thinker as his eloquent speeches have shown. Obama is an individual that embraces the metaphor and a major faction of the American people, as well as the world, have embraced the metaphor that is Barack Obama. Obama’s metaphor has been interpreted through song and through art. Obama’s metaphor, for all intensive purposes, has swept the nation.

And while I will cast my vote for this metaphorical man (btw is voting a left-side brain activity or right-side brain activity) I refuse to believe or get caught up in any metaphor. Nor will I care about or indulge myself in the Democrat Nation Convention either. My life and its conflicts are NOT metaphors. And while metaphorical men have changed the nation and the world, a metaphorical man in modern day politics never has and never will. And also, while I pride myself in being a well informed citizen of the United States of America I don’t deal or care about politics. And to let everyone in on a secret: Barack Obama is a politician. He’s not Jesus.

So all this was just a foreword to say whats really on my mind:
Fuck politics, metaphorically speaking of course.

High School Graduation

Filed under: Picture and a Couple Words, Pretending to be a Philosopher

Went to my sister’s high school graduation the other day. Its funny how stupid high school graduations are. All those “You are the Future” quotes. Fuck that. All the speeches about how people are going miss everyone. I laugh at that. You wont miss ANYONE. If you care about someone enough to miss them you’ll make the effort and sacrifice to keep in touch with them. All that “ill miss you” is all bullshit because most of the time you dont mean it. I am guilty of it too. I said “ill miss you” to people that, frankly, I can give two shits about. But wont take anything away from high school graduations. During them you feel like you can take on the world and conquer it. Its a great and amazing feeling that lingers for a while. But as reality hits you in the face after a few years of college you realize how naive you were.

But anyway congrats to my sis…

Good food always puts a smile on my face. Only thing that makes it taste better is if you break bread with people you care about. Its something I have come to understand rather late in life, that eating with friends is one of the great joys in life. I have always taken it for granted. This past weekend made me realize how much of a pleasure it is. Think about it. The people you eat with most often are probably your closest friends.

There was once a zen master and a boy that lived in a village…
One day the boy got a horse for his birthday.
Everyone in the village said, “Oh, how nice.”

The zen master replied, “We’ll see.”

Then one day the boy fell off the horse and broke his leg.
The village all said, “Oh, how horrible.”

The zen master replied, “We’ll see.”

Then one day a war broke out in the country and all able bodied young men were drafted to serve in the army. But since the boy could not walk he was not drafted.
The village said, “Oh how lucky is he!”

The zen master replied, “We’ll see.”

We’ll see….

Apples and Oranges…

Girls are like oranges. But the thing is us guys dont really care for oranges. What we like is orange juice. So we never realize how amazing oranges taste; we just go straight for the orange juice. Orange juice just isnt that good. Other people have already squeezed it, taken away the pulp, added sugar to it, and some orange juice even comes from concentrate. Hell, they even make orange soda, which isnt oranges at all; they just take orange flavor and add it with carbonated water. Although oranges are the best thing in the whole fucking world guys dont realize it; they’re too busy with orange juice and orange soda. And when a guy does reach for a orange and takes a bite he’s met with the thick and horrible skin that covers it, and trust me, it tastes HORRIBLE. So they just go back to juice and soda. But if a guy makes the effort and takes the initiative to peel the tough skin away he will realizes that oranges are way better than orange juice or orange soda.

Ok so if you read this and said to yourself: WAT THE FUCK IS HE TALKING ABOUT?!?!?! its ok, that just means u are normal. I came up with this whole “orange methaphor” while I was celebrating 4/20. If you dont know what 4/20, its a good thing you dont. My “orange metaphor” story was based on this anecdote:

“Girls are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. The boys dont want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they get the rotten apples from the ground that arent as good, but easy. So the apples up top think something wrong with them when in reality they’re amazing. They just have to wait for the right boy to come along, the one who’s brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.”

And I came up with another story involving bananas but I shall spare you all from that one…
